Pressure-sensitive resistors are a special kind of part you can use in electronics, one that changes the way it works depending on how hard you press its surface. You may also hear these resistors referred to as force sensitive resistors or touch sensors. They appear in many things that can sense touch, pressure or force.
When you press you a PSR its resistance changes. This difference is converted to an electrical signal. Devices rely on this signal to see how hard you are pressing down. In a touch screen-equipped device, for example, pressure-sensitive resistors can indicate when and where someone comes in contact with the screen.
Calibration refers to adjusting pressure sensitive resistors to ensure they function properly. It’s crucial that they are installed properly so that they provide reliable readings. Calibration is configuring how sensitive the resistor is, what signal it sends, and ensuring it properly responds to changes in pressure.
There are a number of advantages that pressure sensitive resistors have. They’re small, light, easy to use and not too expensive. They are also sensitive to even slight alterations in pressure. But there are limits to what they can and cannot do. They are sensitive to temperature variations, and degrade through use. It’s nice to be aware of these things, when we use them.
Lately much new ideas appear on pressure sensitive resistor technology. New materials and designs have been developed to enhance the sensitivity, strength and stability of the resistors. Among the new: flexible pressure sensitive resistors, sensors that can detect multiple touches, and those that could map pressure. These developments have made pressure sensitive resistors usable for a wide range of topics, such as robotics, medicine and automotive.
