The FSR 402 sensor is a special kind of tool that lets us measure the pressure. It is known as a force-sensitive resistor. This is so it can detect how much force is being exerted on it.
The resistance of the FSR402 sensor changes due to the pressure detection. Resistance is a word that describes how hard something tries to stop electricity. When we press on the sensor, it allows more electricity to pass through — because its resistance goes down. We can quantitate this change and see how much force is being applied.
You can find the FSR402 sensor in multiple places, for example in robotics and healthcare. In robots, these sensors tell them when to stop if they encounter something. “Now the robot can shape the way it’s moving.” In health care, FSR402 sensors could enable doctors to watch how a patient moves or how much force they apply doing exercises.
We need to ensure that we configure the FSR402 sensors properly so that we get good readings. That is, hooking them up to a computer that will measure them resistance. We press the sensor with weights of known mass, and then record the resistance to make a curve. A conversion chart like this allows us to convert resistance values into pressure readings.
We can use a technique called signal conditioning to keep ourselves honest in terms of reading from the FSR402 sensor. Which is to say, we clean up the signal coming from the sensor to get rid of any noise. Doing so will give us more accurate and dependable pressure readings.
The FSR402 sensor is a common choice however there exists other similar sensors. Some of these sensors have varying resistance values or pressure response. When we select a sensor for a project, we should consider its range, its sensitivity and how big it is.
